How it works
The KOM model is defined by its comprehensive and holistic approach that includes multiple services delivered in a continuous and long-term manner. Operating year round KOM serves high-risk teens, grades six through twelve. Typically, KOM youth have several deficits, including poor academic performances, negative peer groups, family relationship issues, and limited bonding to community, school, and adult role models.
What it does
The holistic framework of the KOM model provides critical pathways for increasing developmental assets in the lives of youth. The program addresses multiple issues including school dropout, pregnancy prevention, drug and alcohol abuse, violence and delinquency prevention. KOM incorporates the following program components:
- Case Management/Youth Advocates - Youth advocates develop and maintain supportive long term relationships with youth by providing guidance with problem solving and decision making.
- KOM Academy - Youth Advocates develop a collaborative relationship with school and district officials, as well as provide study and tutoring groups.
- Life Skills Group - The highly effective Life Skills Curriculum focuses on a comprehensive list of topics which includes: positive communication, conflict resolution and refusal skills, substance abuse, decision making and goal setting, sexual development, pregnancy prevention, dating and relationships, and peer pressure, among other topics.
- Recreational Activities - Organized outings are structured to offer participants the opportunity to build positive relationships with their peers, gain social skills, and develop alternatives to drug use and other negative behaviors.
- Community Leadership - Program participants complete community service projects to promote a positive relationship with their community.
- Parent and Family Events - KOM provides participants and their families opportunities for growth through organized family activities.
- Self Expression - KOM provides youth with opportunities to explore and express their emotions and individuality utilizing a wide range of activities including: art, drama, dance, music, and art appreciation.
